Mods are modifications that add to Minecraft what the original lacks: new blocks, machines, dimensions, mobs and entire progression systems. On a modded server every player runs the same pack, so the shared world follows the same rules: if the server has industrial automation or magic, it is available to everyone. This is the key difference from vanilla projects, where the feature set is limited to the base game.
To connect to such a server, your client must match it in mod set and version. That is why modded projects are almost always tied to a specific version and mod loader, and joining takes some preparation — installing the pack, and sometimes the loader itself. Many servers ease this step by handing out a ready launcher that installs the required mods automatically.
One thing to understand: full mods are Java Edition territory. The loaders and thousands of modifications are written for it. Bedrock Edition (the mobile and console version) only has add-ons with noticeably more limited capabilities, so when people talk about modded servers, they almost always mean Java.
Forge, Fabric and NeoForge: what mods run on
Mods do not launch on their own — they need a loader. Historically the main one was Forge: most large tech and magic mods are built on it, and it powers the legendary modpacks of the 1.7.10 and 1.12.2 era. Later came Fabric — a light, fast loader popular for recent versions and optimisation mods. From version 1.20.1 onward, a fork called NeoForge split off from Forge and now anchors much of modern modding on the newest versions; on 1.16.5 and earlier, classic Forge is used.
For the player the difference is simple: client and server must use the same loader and a compatible mod set. A mod written for Forge will not run on Fabric, and vice versa. The loader version is always tied to the Minecraft version, so a modded server is always a bundle of "version + loader + a specific pack".
Modpacks and where to get them
Most serious modded servers run not on individual mods but on modpacks — ready sets of dozens, sometimes hundreds, of compatible modifications tuned to work together. The best-known pack platforms are CurseForge, Modrinth and the FTB (Feed The Beast) ecosystem. A server either uses a public modpack (you download it from the CurseForge or Modrinth launcher) or its own custom pack (usually with a branded launcher). Always check the pack name and version on the project's card before connecting.

Which version you need for mods
Version is the key parameter of a modded server, because mods are only compatible with the versions they are written for. Two anchor points emerged historically: 1.7.10 and 1.12.2 — the cult tech and magic mods of the FTB and Tekkit era launched on them, and some never got a port to newer versions. Among the more modern anchors, 1.16.5 stands out — long regarded by the community as the gold standard for stable pack count, and it still holds a huge modpack library; on the newest versions, activity is gradually shifting toward 1.20.1 with NeoForge. If a specific mod or modpack interests you, first check which version it runs on and pick a server to match.
