Forge, Fabric and NeoForge: what mods run on
Mods do not launch on their own — they need a loader. Historically the main one was Forge: most large tech and magic mods are built on it, and it powers the legendary modpacks of the 1.7.10 and 1.12.2 era. Modpacks and where to get them
Most serious modded servers run not on individual mods but on modpacks — ready sets of dozens, sometimes hundreds, of compatible modifications tuned to work together. The best-known pack platforms are CurseForge, Modrinth and the FTB (Feed The Beast) ecosystem. A server either uses a public modpack (you download it from the CurseForge or Modrinth launcher) or its own custom pack (usually with a branded launcher).
