Three formats with similar names differ in essence. An RPG server adds role-playing mechanics through plugins on top of the normal client — you can join without mods. A modded RPG delivers the same ideas through a modpack, so it requires installing a build and a compatible client. Roleplay (RP) is about something else entirely: acting out a role and interacting with other players by the rules, not character progression and classes. Before choosing, work out which experience you actually want.
Popular subtypes of RPG servers
Several directions stand out within the genre. MMORPG servers are large open worlds with guilds, PvP arenas and a shared economy, where hundreds of players progress in parallel. Dungeon-crawler servers build progress around clearing instanced dungeons: a team enters a closed location, fights waves of enemies and a boss for loot.
