RPG servers turn Minecraft into a role-playing game: instead of plain survival you pick a class, gain levels, learn skills and work through story quests. Character stats appear, along with custom mobs and bosses, unique gear with attributes and an economy tied to adventure. It is a deep format for those interested in developing a hero, not just building and gathering resources.
This page lists 96 RPG servers with a live, direct-ping player count. The content varies between projects: some are light RPG layers over survival, others full worlds with a story, dungeons and faction reputation. If you like ready-made role-playing content in modpacks, take a look at modded servers; if you want roleplay specifically, see Roleplay servers.

RPG (role-playing game) on a Minecraft server is a format where role-playing mechanics are layered on top of the normal game: character classes and levels, skill points, custom mobs and bosses, items with attributes and story quests. Instead of the single shared goal of "survive and build", you develop a specific hero — a warrior, mage, archer or one of the classes the server's developers came up with.
RPG is not part of vanilla Minecraft but a server layer made of plugins. So such projects run on Spigot, Paper and Purpur cores, which support plugins for classes, levels, custom mobs and quests. Some servers go further and build their RPG on modpacks — then the role-playing mechanics are baked into the mods, and joining requires the matching client. Which variant a project uses is always stated on its card.
What RPG gameplay consists of
Behind the feeling of a "real role-playing game" on a server sit several connected systems. Classes and skills set the play style: a mage casts, a warrior takes the hits, an archer strikes from afar, and each has its own set of abilities. Levels and experience provide progress — fighting mobs, completing tasks and exploring makes you stronger. Custom mobs and bosses with unique attacks and rewards replace the monotonous vanilla enemies. Quests and story lead you through the world, while unique gear with attributes and rarity gives a reason to explore dungeons and defeat bosses.
RPG, modded RPG and Roleplay: do not confuse them
Three formats with similar names differ in essence. An RPG server adds role-playing mechanics through plugins on top of the normal client — you can join without mods. A modded RPG delivers the same ideas through a modpack, so it requires installing a build and a compatible client. Roleplay (RP) is about something else entirely: acting out a role and interacting with other players by the rules, not character progression and classes. Before choosing, work out which experience you actually want.
Popular subtypes of RPG servers
Several directions stand out within the genre. MMORPG servers are large open worlds with guilds, PvP arenas and a shared economy, where hundreds of players progress in parallel. Dungeon-crawler servers build progress around clearing instanced dungeons: a team enters a closed location, fights waves of enemies and a boss for loot. Servers with factions and reputation add politics to the role-playing mechanics: you join a side, earn reputation and influence the world. Many projects combine these directions, and the specific focus is stated in the server's description.

Who RPG servers are for
RPG servers are for those who feel Minecraft lacks a goal and long-term progression. If you enjoy role-playing games, developing a character, exploring classes and working through story content, such a project offers dozens of hours of growth with clear motivation. It is also a great format for playing together: classes complement each other, and a group naturally forms a party to clear dungeons and fight bosses. Before choosing, check on the project's card whether the RPG runs on plugins or a modpack and which client you need to join. Mind the platform too: most RPG plugins work on Java Edition, while on Bedrock role-playing mechanics are rarer and depend on the core — support is noted on the project's card.
